1990s

The quants arrive.

Goldman. Renaissance. D.E. Shaw. Mathematics replaced intuition. Physics PhDs replaced traders. Retail never got the memo. The gap opened and nobody told you.

2000

HFT is born.

Decimalization. Latency becomes the product. Virtu Financial goes 1,237 consecutive trading days without a loss. Speed won. You lost before you clicked Buy.

2010

Flash Crash.

May 6. 2:45 PM ET. 36 minutes. $1 trillion evaporates. Algos talking to algos with no humans in the loop. The market had a seizure and nobody could stop it. The system was fully theirs now.

2015

APIs reach retail.

Zerodha opens Kite — the first retail-grade trading API in India. Direct market access for anyone with a demat account. The execution tools finally arrive. The intelligence doesn't follow. Rules, not reasoning. You could automate your trades — you just couldn't think.

2021

Retail finds a weapon.

WSB vs. Citadel. Collective irrationality beats quant funds — once. GameStop's short interest hits 140% of its float. The institutions adapt in weeks. The window closes. It was a glitch, not a shift.

2023–24

The models arrive.

GPT-4. Claude. For the first time, a machine can read context, reason through uncertainty, explain its thinking. The intelligence gap collapses — in theory. The bridge still doesn't exist.

2025

The models get dangerous.

Claude Opus. GPT-5.4. Reasoning at a level no human trader can match at scale. And still — 91% of F&O traders lose money. ₹1.05 lakh crore destroyed in a year. The tools exist. The intelligence exists. The bridge doesn't.
